Ape on the Loose is a short, side-view linear game developed while I was completing my final degree project, under a very limited timeframe. It was my first linear game and my first experience designing a boss fight.
The player controls a monkey that can only run, exploring a laboratory while facing a giant hamster and a gorilla as the final boss, both determined to stop his escape.
Role: Programming
Team Size: 4
Duration: 1 Month
Engine: Unity Engine URP
This side-view linear game was developed in parallel with my final academic project, meaning time was extremely limited. The player takes control of a test subject monkey trapped inside a research facility and must escape through cells, testing rooms, and common areas until reaching freedom.
● The player can only move, which reinforces the feeling of helplessness and vulnerability within the hostile environment.
● A dynamic camera smoothly follows the player, adjusting its position and angle to fit each room’s structure and flow.
● Found in the first area, guarding the button that unlocks the next section.
● Starts shooting before becoming visible, forcing the player to use obstacles for cover.
● Cannot be defeated directly:
○ A manhole cover can be found in a nearby hidden room.
○ By using it with the right mouse button, the player can block and reflect the hamster’s shots, defeating it indirectly.
● Once defeated, the player can press the red button to open the door and proceed.

● Located in the center of the cafeteria, the game’s final area, standing with its back turned and behaving erratically.
● The gorilla cannot die — the player’s goal is to survive for 40 seconds until the exit door unlocks.
● Its attacks change dynamically based on distance, making some very difficult to dodge.
● Initially, it walks slowly, but halfway through the fight it suddenly starts running faster than the player. The music shifts, and the tension skyrockets, creating a thrilling and stressful climax.

● The player begins in the cell and testing area.
● After defeating the hamster, they move through a long corridor leading to the ape playroom, which includes a short parkour section to reach the upper floor.
● From there, the player passes through a meeting room and finally arrives at the cafeteria, where the boss fight takes place.
● After surviving 40 seconds, the exit door unlocks, allowing the player to escape and complete the game.
